Britannia on a Reach

Oil on canvas 30” X 22” Available

Britannia was built in1893 by D & W Henderson & Co of Glasgow to the design of George Lennox Watson. Probably the most famous racing yacht of all time, her career lasted until 1935 by which time she had taken 231 firsts out of 635 starts. Britannia was sold and bought back twice by King Edward VII. After his death she was inherited by King George V who raced her until 1935.

Marigold

Acrylic on Board 8” X 12” In Private Collection

Marigold was one of the prettiest vessels I saw at Cowes in 2001. She was taking part in the America’s Cup 150th Jubilee and, with a surfeit of beautiful restored yachts from all around the world, there was stiff competition from the likes of Mariette, Moonbeam and the J class yachts, Endeavour, Shamrock and Velsheda

Westward and Britannia Racing, c.1928, Westward was designed and built by Herreshoff. In 1920 she was bought by T. B. Davis

Westward and Britannia Racing, c.1928

Oil on canvas 18” X 24” Available

Westward was designed and built by Herreshoff. In 1920 she was bought by T. B. Davis. He was one of the most enthusiastic yachtsmen of the era and would live on board all summer, happily mucking in with the crew as the need arose.

Britannia was built in 1893. Both vessels were scuttled after the deaths of their owners. They are pictured here during the 1928 Cowes regatta in Spithead, with Westward leading. In the background is R.M.S. Aquitania Full sized replicas of both vessels have been launched recently. Harlequin is a copy of Britannia and Eleanora of Westward. It is wonderful to think that two of the most beautiful and famous of the racing yacht may well be seen racing again.
