Storm at Hope Cove

Storm at Hope Cove

Pastel 15” X 22” In Private Collection

In stormy weather it is impossible to work outside at all but I still like to wrap up and watch the sea venting its fury on the rocks. I sketched the rocks at Hope Cove after one storm and in this painting tried to recapture the power of the stormy sea.

Heavy Seas near Morte Point

Pastel 13” X 22” In Private Collection

In this painting I tried to capture the transient light effects as the weather starts to clear after a storm. The painting was exhibited and sold at the RSMA in 2003.

Afternoon near Morte Point

Pastel 15” X 22” In Private Collection

I love to sketch the rock formations and coastal views on the North and South Devon Coast Paths. If I see a particularly pleasing light or wave shape I try to remember it (sometimes it is gone before I can even use my camera) and sketch it while it is still fresh in my memory. I then paint from these sketches. This painting was exhibited at the RSMA in 2003.

Dawn at Lynmouth

Pastel 15” X 22” In Private Collection

Ever since I worked on a farm in Somerset over thirty years ago I have loved getting up early and going for a walk to watch the dawn break. It is not surprising that this is reflected in my paintings and dawn skies feature prominently in my choice of subject matter. This painting was exhibited and sold at the RSMA in 2002.

Silver Light

Pastel 15” X 22” Available

This was another effect of the light that was gone in a few minutes, but by that time I had been so captivated by it that reproducing it in my studio was not too difficult.
